There is an ongoing debate between homeowners as to whether it is easier to clean a small house or a large one.

On one hand, if you live in a big house, you have more rooms to clean. But on the other, you have more space to manuever in.

Your mileage may vary here depending on the techniques you use, but there are plenty of arguments to be made that smaller is better when it comes to easy cleaning. In this post, we are going to give you 7 reasons why it is easier to clean a tiny house than a full-size home.

  1. Open floor plans and hardwood floors

To start with, many tiny houses are characterized by open floor plans with hardwood floors running throughout. You can see here that there is an uninterrupted flow of flooring between the kitchen and living room in our park model homes. Sweeping and mopping flooring like this is ridiculously fast and easy.

Contrast that with houses that have a lot of carpeting, and/or raised seams between rooms.

  1. Excellent natural light

Another nice thing about park model homes is that they typically feature large windows that let in lots of sunlight. This makes it easy to see what you are doing when you are cleaning, and whether the dust is really gone. As a result, you may spend less time and effort cleaning, and end up with better results each time.

  1. You can sweep debris right out the front door

Speaking of sweeping, all you need to do to get the floors of your tiny house clean is to start at the back and then sweep all the debris toward the door. Then, just sweep it directly outside! If you have a porch, sweep it off the porch and you are all done. With a larger house, the layout might make this impossible.

  1. Minimalist design

Many tiny houses feature a minimalist design in order to maximize the use of the available space. Minimalism is characterized by simplicity. That is beneficial when you are cleaning, because it generally means you are dealing with fewer nooks, crannies and hard-to-reach spaces.

  1. Less space and fewer surfaces to clean

One of the most obvious reasons why it is easy to clean a tiny house is the simple reality that there are fewer surfaces to clean altogether. Instead of cleaning 1,800 square feet or more, you are just cleaning a few hundred square feet. That takes less time and energy.

Moreover, a lot of your stuff is going to be stored inside cabinets in a tiny house. Cabinets can get dust inside them, of course, but they do offer a bit of protection compared to open shelving. So, this also reduces the frequency with which you need to clean.

  1. Have a dirty job to do? Just step outside

If you suddenly find yourself with a messy job of some sort to take care of, you are always just a short distance from the outdoors in a tiny house. So, if need be, you can take whatever it is and simply run outside to finish handling it. The fewer messes you make indoors, the fewer you have to clean up later.

Were you indoors, of course, you might also have this option, but it might take you longer and more steps to get outdoors. Along the way, you could spill or splash whatever it is you are trying to get outside.

  1. Strategically-placed doors

Something else which can make it easy to keep a tiny house clean has to do with the layout. Not every tiny home boasts this feature, but a strategically placed back door can make a huge difference in your life.

For example, here you see the Woodland Park Timber Ridge Kennedy, which has a convenient back door located right near the bathroom.

So, let’s say your kids are out playing in the yard, and they are covered in mud. Instead of entering through the front door and tracking mud all the way through the living room, kitchen and down the hall to the bathroom, they can just shoot across the hall from the back door to the bathroom. Then they can clean themselves off without making a big mess. This makes a back door an excellent tiny house design option!

If you had a larger house, you might not have a door located so close to a bathroom. There are sometimes bathrooms off of entryways, but they tend to be small and cramped, and generally without any sort of bathtub or shower. A bathroom with a shower may be way down a hall or even upstairs. But with this tiny house layout, you can get right to the shower from outdoors.
